Thymoquinone is a compound that has steadily been attracting the attention of both the ordinary person and the scientific community. Thymoquinone (TQ) is the scientific name for the compound contained in the Nigella sativa plant. The plant itself was used by ancient healers in past civilizations for hundreds of years. There’s also evidence of the plant in the tomb of King Tut. Due to the plant’s past, research is now being conducted on the various chemicals contained in the plant and how they benefit our bodies.

In the traditional sense, N. Sativa was used to treat various diseases including fever, allergies, headache, cough, parasites, toothache, inflammations, diabetes, and dizziness, among others. The N. Sativa is native to South West Asia and has since been moved to Northern Africa and Europe, where it has been cultivated and naturalized. The same plant is equally known for its black cumin seeds or simply black seed which acts as both a spice and condiment.

The seeds of the Nigella Sativa plant are considered a remedy for many modern-day diseases including cancer. The seed is very good at being an all-around immune booster. There is both anecdotal evidence as well as thousands of studies that back these claims.

A recent study has discovered more information on the Black Seed’s neuropsychiatric benefits

The meta-study, Neuropsychiatric Effects of Nigella sativa (Black Seed), reviews in detail, studies from all over the world. These studies delve into the black cumin seed/oil and its positive impact on neurological and central nervous systems. Many of them mention the plant’s presence of thymoquinone which has been shown to be a huge player in the plant’s therapeutic effects.

An international team with Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore in charge has discovered a possible relationship between common antidepressant fluoxetine and autistic-like characteristic in adult mice. Fluoxetine comes under brand names Sarafem and Prozac. The study was published in the Molecular Brain journal. Collaborators in the research come from South Korea and Singapore.

Since the 1980s, people throughout the world have been able to access antidepressants that they have used to treat depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and a host of other psychiatrist disorders. Some of the most commonly used antidepressants are escitalopram (Lexapro), fluoxetine (Prozac), sertraline (Zoloft), fluvoxamine (Luvox), paroxetine (Paxil), citalopram (Celexa) and Duloxetine (Cymbalta).

Over this time, prescription of these drugs has more than doubled, which in itself is a cause of concern. While they have worked to reduce depression symptoms, they have also been noted to have

Depression is a severe mental disorder that’s becoming common across the world. While it’s frequent occurrence would be expected to prompt immediate and strong action to mitigate effects and manage the condition, depression continues to negatively affect quality of life, the ability to work, and it’s also the reason for the increase in suicide risk. And as all these things go on, the treatment options available for depression are not satisfactory and even when treatment is prescribed, the side effects of the medications prescribed aren’t well addressed.

One of the biggest side effects of taking antidepressants is insomnia and other sleep-related problems.  Most of the patients

Individuals experiencing depression will often be recommended an antidepressant.

But while the unwanted side effects of the prescriptions (weight gain, headaches, etc.) are widely recognized, one effect is just just starting to be discussed publicly. They may stop working.

If you find that your medication isn’t effective anymore, and your depression symptoms are resurfacing, there are various reasons why this might be occurring.

truth-about-melatonin.jpg

For most people, melatonin may be the remedy to preventing another awful slumber. We realize that sleep is extremely crucial to keeping up the health of the body and warding off severe and chronic health issues. But what is melatonin? It’s actually a hormone that is in charge of establishing our sleep-wake cycle, so long as you have the proper melatonin dosage.

So… what is the proper dosage?

A study with MIT researchers,  Richard Wurtman, the Cecil H. Green Distinguished Professor and program director of the Clinical Research Center was published in late 2001 confirming the best dosage, and it’s not the standard dose you can pick up at Walgreens.

For many people with depression, a diagnosis from a psychiatrist often means accepting that you will be on antidepressants for most of your life. You may decide to delay the first prescription for as long as possible, but after some time, antidepressants may be your last option. Unfortunately, from the time you accept medication, even as your symptoms lift, another heavy cloud hovers – the fact that the medications you now depend on can have adverse side effects at any time.
